Working as a Cath lab nurse, you will be supporting cardiologists during the cardiac catheterisation test procedure, also known as an Angiogram. The Cath lab nurse will care for patients before, during and after the procedure whilst monitoring the patient’s vital signs. Catheterisation nursing is a specialist role that requires in-depth training, over and above being a registered nurse. Being a Cath lab nurse  

As a Cath lab nurse, you would have to be a detail-orientated, highly organised professional. You must be able to present yourself in a calm, patient and professional way, even in stressful and high-pressure situations.

Your daily duties would include the following responsibilities:

  • Being directly involved in patient admissions, ensuring consent paperwork is completed and filed correctly
  • Preparing patients for the catheterisation procedure, which may include shaving areas where the catheter will be inserted, as well as disinfecting skin area preoperatively. The Cath lab nurse will also ensure that the environment and equipment is sterilised and prepared for the procedure as per Lab protocol.
  • Monitoring patients during the catheterisation procedure, to ensure the patient is sufficiently sedated and not experiencing any pain or adverse side effects from medication.
  • Record patient observations, such as blood pressure, temperature, heart rate, respiration rate and oxygen level
  • Supporting the cardiologist with intervention procedures, such as balloon angioplasty or placement of stents
  • Observing patient’s for any post-procedure side effects
  • Adhering to the NMBI professional Code of Conduct

Salaries

The industry standard for Cath lab nurses ranges from 40K € to 50K € and will increase based on your number of years of experience in the field. With competitive pay rates, Bowler Recruitment will likely be able to push your salary beyond the “going rate”.

Qualifications required

To work as a Cath lab nurse in Ireland, you will be a registered nurse with the NMBI (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland) or entitled to be so registered. Furthermore, you will have undergone specialist training in order to hone in on the skills required within the Cath lab nursing sector.
